On November 16, 2021, a series of unprecedented atmospheric river events led to a breach in the Sumas River Dike. This failure caused widespread flooding across the Sumas Prairie and forced the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway in Abbotsford. The severity of the flooding presented considerable challenges for the emergency response teams, whose immediate priority was to close the breach and prevent further inflow from the Sumas River into the Prairie.
The innovative approach developed for the initial breach closure proved critical to the success of subsequent remedial efforts, ultimately restoring the dike to full functionality.
The CGS article provides a comprehensive overview of the project and highlights Kontur’s role in addressing this complex geotechnical and infrastructure challenge.
