Kontur Geotechnical Consultants Inc. (Kontur) was founded in early 2018 by Matthew Yip and J.Y. (Yoshi) Tanaka, and joined by Evan Sykes shortly thereafter. Kontur is a full-service geotechnical consulting and construction materials testing firm that provides engineering consultation for a wide-array of projects and clients.
Matthew has over 19 years of geotechnical engineering experience focused on materials testing, geotechnical explorations, characterizations, assessments, geological hazard evaluations (landslide assessments), and geotechnical designs for various buildings, facilities, and infrastructure. Matthew is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with both the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC) and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientist of Alberta (APEGA). Matthew is a Responsible Registrant for Kontur's EGBC Permit-to-Practice. Matthew holds a Bachelors degree in Geological Engineering, as well as a Masters of Engineering degree in Geological Engineering, both from the University of British Columbia.
Yoshi has over 19 years of geotechnical engineering experience focused on geotechnical explorations, characterizations, assessments, and geotechnical designs for various buildings, facilities, and infrastructure. Yoshi's experience has included various components of geotechnical earthquake engineering analysis and soft/compressible ground analysis. Yoshi is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC). Yoshi holds a Bachelors degree in Geological Engineering from the University of British Columbia.
Evan has over 34 years of geotechnical engineering experience focused on geotechnical and geophysical explorations, characterizations, assessments, geological hazard evaluations (including rock slope stability), and geotechnical designs for various buildings, facilities, and infrastructure. Evan is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC). Evan holds a Bachelors degree in Geological Engineering from the University of British Columbia.
Brian has over 34 years of Geotechnical Engineering Consulting experience focused on geotechnical explorations, characterizations, assessments, and studies, for various buildings, facilities, and small- to large-scale infrastructure projects. Brian's experience has included various components of embankments, engineered slopes, dikes, and use of geosythetic materials. Brian is a Registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia. Brian holds a Bachelor of Engineering Science and as well as a Doctorate in Engineering Science, both obtained from Western University.
Khidhir brings over 27 years of experience practicing geotechnical engineering including more than 14 years for projects throughout the Lower Mainland and BC’s Interior. Khidhir has considerable experience in the design and construction review of temporary deep excavations and excavations shoring; assessment of slope stability under static and seismic conditions; pre-load design; soil densification design; slope stabilization systems; retaining wall design; shallow and deep foundation design, and site-specific seismic response analysis, and conducting peer review reports for geotechnical reports and excavation shoring design prepared by others. Khidhir is a Registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia. Khidhir holds a Masters degree in Civil Engineering from Baghdad University (1995) and a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from Al Mustansiriyah University (1991).
Nima brings over 15 years of geotechnical experience extending to infrastructure, subdivisions, residential, commercial, institutional, industrial developments (low-rise & high-rise), and sloping areas throughout the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, and the Sunshine Coast, BC. Nima has experience in design and construction review of temporary excavations, temporary shoring systems, segmental retaining walls, seismic design, shallow and deep foundations, slope stability, and soft soils. Nima holds a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering and is a Registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia.
Pranay brings over 18 years of diversified geotechnical engineering design and construction experience, in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley area. Pranay focuses on linear (roads, bridges, pavement water/sewer/sanitary/storm pipelines, retaining walls, culverts) and non-linear infrastructures (pump stations, WTP, WWTP, facilities, buildings), institutional, residential, commercial, and industrial development projects. Pranay is a Registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia. He holds a Masters degree in Civil Engineering from Concordia University and a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from Khulna University of Engineering and Technology.
Christie brings over 10 years of diverse geotechnical engineering experience. She is a Professional Engineer registered in the Province of British Columbia and holds both a Doctorate and a Master of Science in Engineering in Geotechnical Engineering from Tongji University, Shanghai, China, with a focus on tunneling. In Canada, her expertise encompasses geohazard risk assessments and mitigation, stability control of excavation cuts and slopes, temporary excavations and shoring, as well as traditional geotechnical foundation work. Christie is proficient in various geotechnical engineering assessment models and numerical analysis tools, including Plaxis, SLOPE/W, LPILE. Christie has specific experience in preload design, foundation design, settlement calculation, retaining walls, stability analysis, and soil densification design.
Dave Silveira is a Senior Geotechnical Technician and Project Manager with over 20 years of experience supervising and managing geotechnical engineering projects across Western Canada. His expertise spans the planning and coordination of technical drilling programs, site explorations, instrumentation installation, and construction reviews for piled foundations, subgrades, excavations, and shoring systems.
Dave has successfully managed a wide range of projects in remote First Nation communities along the Central Coast and throughout British Columbia. These include linear infrastructure, wastewater treatment systems, housing developments, multi-purpose buildings, subdivisions, and new road construction. He has also overseen numerous municipal linear infrastructure upgrades and many BC Hydro Ductbank infrastructure upgrade projects.
In addition to his geotechnical work, Dave has led large-scale quality control construction materials testing programs, including recent rapid transit infrastructure construction projects. He has also managed quality assurance construction materials testing projects for MOTT, municipalities, and various owners, ensuring compliance with rigorous standards and delivering reliable data to support construction quality and performance.
Dave brings a practical, hands-on approach to every project, emphasizing technical excellence, safety, and strong collaboration in diverse and often challenging environments.
Tatyana leads Kontur's Materials Laboratory and is the Supervising Professional for Kontur's CCIL-Certified Laboratories. With over 32 years of experience, Tatyana is a highly accomplished Professional Senior Materials Engineer and is highly skilled and knowledgeable in both the testing, consulting, and management aspects of construction materials. She has also been instrumental to the development and research of the application of Recycled Asphalt Products, Shingles, Warm Technology, Hamburg Wheel Testing, and mix moisture sensitivity. Tatyana is an Approved Professional under EGBC's Permit-to-Practice and holds CCIL certification for Soils, Asphalt, Concrete (Type QL).
Gody brings over 22 years of expertise in construction materials consulting, testing, and the concrete ready-mix industry. As Lead Project Manager in our Field Services, Gody excels in evaluating quality issues in concrete, soils, aggregates (including crushing control), and asphalt materials. Gody’s extensive experience spans from Quality Control and Quality Assurance for various highways, oil & gas pipelines, and industrial and commercial developments to large infrastructure projects such as YVR South Runway, several large Hydroelectric Projects, and various BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure End Production Specification (EPS) projects.
Gody is a registered Applied Science Technologist in the Province of British Columbia and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the National University in Manila, Philippines.
Ryan brings over 18 years of experience in construction materials testing, with a focus on quality assurance and control of asphalt, soils, and concrete for infrastructure, transportation, and building projects across British Columbia and Alberta. He is certified by the Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories (CCIL) in Concrete (Type QL/QF), Soils, and Asphalt, a member of the Canadian Technical Asphalt Association (CTAA) for over 10 years and serves as Kontur’s Radiation Safety Officer. As Director of Field and Laboratory Services, Ryan oversees Kontur’s in-house laboratory and field operations, managing a large team of field and laboratory technologists and technicians. Ryan’s leadership ensures that all projects meet rigorous technical standards and are delivered in accordance with project specifications.
Marc Varty has been involved in the construction industry for over 30 years years and has been heavily involved in the Engineering and Materials Testing side for the last 20 years. Marc's career has been marked by a strong emphasis on nurturing client and staff relationships, and driving market and sales growth by showcasing Kontur's capabilities and services.

Brian Bebek brings over 13 years as a senior post-tension certified inspector for Structural Slabs for buildings and bridges, including post-tensioning services for temporary and permanent soil/rock bars and strand anchors.
He is also a Certified Construction Safety Officer and Specialist and a CCIL and CDA Certified Technologist.
Shannon Davison has 22 years of experience as Office Manager and ensures that Kontur’s operations run smoothly.
Her strong organizational skills and keen attention to detail enable her to work closely with Project Managers, Accounting, and Administrative Staff.
With over 45 years of administrative experience, including 35 years in the engineering and consulting fields, Diane McCulloch excels in organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
She collaborates closely with Project Managers to ensure the timely delivery, accuracy, and professional presentation of project deliverables and proposals.
Anilu brings over 18 years of dispatching and materials experience. In our service industry, dispatch plays a vital function in providing customer service support and in providing logistical support to field technicians. Responding to incoming calls from contractors in a timely manner, coordinating and optimizing schedules with field service scheduling software, ensuring field staff have the proper information they will need out in the field, and communicating with mobile units to ensure field technicians receive important information or service calls are critically important to providing quality and efficient service to our clients. At Kontur, we also use mapping software to locate the best routes, keep track of the what’s happening in the field, and help techs with any questions or concerns they may have.
With 18 years of expertise in Quality Management, Quality Control, and audit procedures, Diane excels in meticulous attention to detail, including ensuring Kontur's adherence to its Permit-to-Practice.
Additionally, she supports the Materials Testing Division.
