In November of 2021, the Upper Sumas Dike breached between about Chainage 5+400 and 5+550. The dike breach was a result of overtopping of the dike that occurred following an unprecedented series of atmospheric river events in southwestern BC. It resulted in flooding of a large area of the Sumas Prairie in Abbotsford, BC.
In September 2023 the first paper was presented to the 29th Vancouver Geotechnical Society (VGS) Symposium by Dr. Brian Mylleville, P.Eng., as a keynote address titled “Repair of the Sumas River Dike Breach: A Case History”. This paper describes the main breach that occurred including the failure mechanism and the key geotechnical engineering considerations related to design and construction of the breach repair.
As a follow-up, Dr. Brian Mylleville, P.Eng. gave another related presentation to the 30th VGS Symposium, titled, “Considerations in the design and construction of the dike breach repairs” in May 2024.
