    Our Story and Team    

Kontur Geotechnical Consultants Inc. (Kontur) was founded in early 2018 by Matthew Yip and J.Y. (Yoshi) Tanaka.  Kontur is a full-service geotechnical consulting firm that provides engineering consultation for a wide-array of projects and clients.

In order to provide prompt service throughout Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, Kontur's main office is centrally located in Port Coquitlam, BC.  Kontur also has an office in Squamish, BC, which allows Kontur to efficiently service projects throughout the Sunshine Coast and Sea to Sky regions.

Kontur is comprised of three Principal Geotechnical Engineers: Evan Sykes; Yoshi Tanaka; and Matthew Yip.  Combined, Evan, Yoshi, and Matthew, have over 50 years of geotechnical engineering knowledge and experience in British Columbia and Alberta, Canada.

Kontur's key team of individuals are noted below:

  • Matthew Yip, M.Eng., P.Eng., CEO + Principal Geotechnical Engineer.  Matthew has over 15 years of geotechnical engineering experience focused on materials testing, geotechnical explorations, characterizations, assessments, geological hazard evaluations (landslide assessments), and geotechnical designs for various buildings, facilities, and infrastructure.  Matthew is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with both the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC) and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientist of Alberta (APEGA).  Matthew holds a Bachelors degree in Geological Engineering, as well as a Masters of Engineering degree in Geological Engineering, both from the University of British Columbia

  • J.Y. (Yoshi) Tanaka, P.Eng., COO + Principal Geotechnical Engineer.  Yoshi has over 15 years of geotechnical engineering experience focused on geotechnical explorations, characterizations, assessments, and geotechnical designs for various buildings, facilities, and infrastructure.  Yoshi's experience has included various components of geotechnical earthquake engineering analysis and soft/compressible ground analysis.  Yoshi is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).  Yoshi holds a Bachelors degree in Geological Engineering from the University of British Columbia.

  • Evan Sykes, P.Eng., Director + Principal Geotechnical Engineer.  Evan has over 30 years of geotechnical engineering experience focused on geotechnical and geophysical explorations, characterizations, assessments, geological hazard evaluations (including rock slope stability), and geotechnical designs for various buildings, facilities, and infrastructure.  Evan is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).  Evan holds a Bachelors degree in Geological Engineering from the University of British Columbia.

  • Brian Mylleville, Ph.D., P.Eng., Senior Project Manager + Senior Geotechnical Engineer.  Brian has over 30 years of Geotechnical Engineering Consulting experience focused on geotechnical explorations, characterizations, assessments, and studies, for various buildings, facilities, and small- to large-scale infrastructure projects.  Brian's experience has included various components of embankments, engineered slopes, dikes, and use of geosythetic materials.  Brian is a Registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia, Alberta, Saksatchewan, and Ontario.  Brian holds a Bachelor of Engineering Science and as well as a Doctorate in Engineering Science, both obtained from Western University.

  • Jared Whitehead, M.Eng., P.Eng., Project Manager + Geotechnical Engineer.  Jared has over 11 years of experience in geotechnical consulting, project management, and heavy civil construction projects, in the mining, industrial, commercial, and residential sectors.  Jared's experience has included a variety of multi-disciplinary projects in Western Canada, of varying size and complexity at different stages of planning, design, construction, and operations.  He is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).  Jared holds a Bachelors Degree in Applied Science as well as a Master of Geotechnical Engineering, both from the University of British Columbia.

  • Mr. Dave Silveira, Project Manager + Senior Geotechnical Technician.  Dave brings over 16 years of experience as a Geotechnical Technician and Project Manager, having supervised geotechnical engineering projects throughout western Canada. His expertise includes planning, organizing and managing technical drilling programs; organizing site exploration programs, instrumentation programs, construction review of installation of piled foundations; subgrade reviews; excavation and shoring reviews and laboratory testing.  Dave is experienced in the areas of drilling and geotechnical explorations and instrumentation installation for road and transit infrastructure, tailings dams, hydro-electric dams, industrial and commercial building foundations as well as industrial site de-watering well installations.

  • Mr. Ryan Fenske, Project Manager + Senior Materials Technician.  Ryan brings over 14 years of experience as a Materials Technician and Project Manager, having supervised and managed Quality Assurance and Quality Control Testing programs for various asphalt and highways projects throughout the province.  This includes work for Parks Canada (2015 to 2020 Pavement Rehabilitation Programs), BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, and local government (municipalities).

  • Ms. Tatyana Tsvetkova, P.Eng., Laboratory Manager + Materials/Pavements Engineer.  Tatyana brings over 28 years of asphalt testing, asphalt mix design, and consulting/troubleshooting experience.  She has also been instrumental to the development and research of the application of Recycled Asphalt Products, Shingles, Warm Technology, Hamburg Wheel Testing, and mix moisture sensitivity.

  • Mr. Gody Viana, A.Sc.T., Field Manager + Quality Manager.  Gody brings over 20 years of Materials Testing and Quality Management to Kontur’s team.  Gody’s experience spans from routine Quality Control Testing projects to Quality Management for projects like YVR South Runway, several large Hydroelectric Projects, and various BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure projects (End Product Specification – EPS).
