Kontur delivers a keynote address "Repair of the Sumas River Dike Breach: A Case History" at the 29th VGS Symposium

September 15, 2023

Dr. Brian Mylleville, Ph.D., P.Eng., Kontur's Senior Project Manager and Senior Geotechnical Engineer, presented this technical paper at the 29th Symposium of the Vancouver Geotechnical Society on “Geotechnical Engineering in Infrastructure“.

In November of 2021, the Upper Sumas Dike breached between about Chainage 5+400 and 5+550. The dike breach was a result of overtopping of the dike that occurred following an unprecedented series of atmospheric river events in southwestern BC. It resulted in flooding of a large area of the Sumas Prairie in Abbotsford, BC.

This paper describes the main breach that occurred including the failure mechanism and the key geotechnical engineering considerations related to design and construction of the breach repair.
